Movement Mobiles
1st Grade Level
Objectives: Students will...
-
Create mobiles, moving pieces of art
-
Utilize both implied and real movement in the composition of their mobile
-
Translate their imaginative journey as an insect (or bird) to crayon markings in their design
-
Use good craftsmanship in adhering loop and ribbon to mobile
These mobiles were a great lesson in incorporating art and imagination! The students already had mobiles hanging in their rooms at this time so it was a perfect fit.
We began by going through this Prezi about types of movement, both real and implied. The students were also learning about insects in their classrooms, so we concentrated on different types of bugs for their mobiles. They picked the insect and we walked through the parts - the head, thorax, abdomen, wings - as we drew together.
This was the fun part - we had students pause, close their eyes, and pretend to be an insect flying through the air! Dipping, turning, buzzing around, they then took those imagined paths and started coloring in the wings of their insects. After coloring both of the two triangles we took our ribbon and glued a loop to hang them from to one side. Dangling ribbon was another addition to create real movement to the mobiles. These were sandwiched together to make a two-sided mobile, art from every angle.
After the mobile was put together students could gently take the loop and have their insects fly around the room. These were a fun project that added some color and imaginative movement in the classrooms.
